Description

Oh my god, this was fun. I was searching for pictures with lots of emotion and expression in them and found this one. It's such a great reference and I'm a little sorry that I didn't spend more time to draw all the details the reference provides - but only a little ;)

So this is my second charcoal drawing - I hope you all like it, I certainly do :D
I wanted to do a full black background and started on it, smudging the charcoal with a tissue. Then I noticed, that I really like the effect it gave, so I just kept it that way - hence the title (yes I was creative with that for once :P )
Anyways, I guess I'm on a roll, I'm already working on the next one, though I'm not sure whether it'll be charcoal again.

Have a great weekend everyone!!

Firstly, I don't think the "dark spots" are a problem - it's just an effect you get, like shooting with grainy film. It's part of the medium you chose (charcoal).

I think you did a fantastic job with this. The mouth/teeth is especially well done, as is the suggestion of stubble - it looks (although I am not zoomed in) as if you have drawn each hair in, but I would imagine that is near impossible with charcoal. You did a good job with the subtle changes in tone as well, like the bit above his eyebrows where his brow is ever so slightly scrunched, but not enough to cause visible wrinkles.

The one small improvement I can suggest is with the eyes. The whites look a bit dark and there's no reflections in them at all. Perhaps they were in shadow but it's rare for there to be no light in the eye (and sometimes it's worth putting in a catchlight anyway, as eyes tend to look a little dead without) and you could do with a little bit of difference in shading on the whites - making them a bit whiter in places.

Finally, I think it's good that you didn't include the neck or clothes. I like the way the "floating head" look combines with the expression to make this interesting as well as technically good.
